About the Department
History, with a long academic tradition, was one of earliest departments established at Sun Yatsen University. The founders of modern Chinese historical studies, such as Chen Yinko, Fu Sinian, Gu Jigang, and Liang Fangzhong, had spent considerable time here to teach and research. During the last century, their efforts have contributed to the departmental development and the establishment of a wonderful tradition of learning and studying. In the last thirty years, our department has achieved significant improvements and the overall strength has been enhanced. Now, we have nearly fifty faculty members, including twenty four professors and sixteen assistant professors, who graduated from renowned universities and institutions, such as the Oxford University, University of Washington, Moscow University, Tokyo University, Peking University, and Fudan University. Several current faculty members used to work at universities in United States, Japan, Israel, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Their appointments allow us to share their strong international backgrounds. Within our faculty members, we have one Yangtze River professor appointed by the Ministry of Education, two Pearl River Professors, the Vice President of the Association of Historical Studies in China, one member of the Branch of Historical Studies in the Committee of Academic Degrees, the State Department, the Vice Director and two members of the Committee of the Historical Education in the Minister of Education, the President of the Association of Historical Studies in Guangdong, the winner of the “Renowned Teacher of the Country”, nine winners of the “Crossing-the-Century and the New-Century Individuals” nominated by the Ministry of Education, and one winner of the “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents” program. Professor Sang Bin, Professor Chen Chunsheng, and Professor Liu Zhiwei, have been the leading scholars of their fields around the world. The History Department has a long tradition of enhancing academic exchange and cooperation and has established an open and free environment for researching and studying. We have established long, multi-layer, and diverse academic exchange and cooperating relationship with dozens of universities and institutes. The academic influences of the History Department has been growing.
